Millions have turned to laser assisted in Situkeratomileusis (LASIK) to correct myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism and do away with wearing glasses.
In the 1950's, Spanish ophthalmologist Jose Barraquer devised a method for surgically changing the shape of the cornea. His technique was developed further by Russian ophthalmologist and eye surgeon Svyatoslav Fyodorov, who created radial keratotomy while treating a boy whose glasses had smashed into his eyes after a fall. He made several radial incisions form the pupil to the edge of the cornea to remove the glass. Once, the cornea had healed the boy's eyesight was much better. Fyodorov's success fueled much interest in refractive surgery.
In 1968, work was going on the university of California, where Irelian physicist Mani lal Bhumik and colleagues developed an Excimen Laser. This creates new molecules whe
n xenon, argon or krypton glasses are excited. In 1973, Bhumik told the world the new technique at a meeting of the Dencer optical society of America and later went on to patent it. Seven years later, Rangaswamy Srinivasan and Indian chemist, found that an ultra violet Exeimer laser could accurately detect living tissue without damaging the surrounding tissues.
Building on all this, LASIK surgery was finally put together by Italian Lucio Buratto, and Greek Loamis Pallikaris in 1990. It was faster more accurate, and had lower risk of complications than older techniques. Newer technologies have taken LASIK further performance wise, but its limitations have also led to host of other development.

  1. It is interesting that in 1968 Irelian physicist Mani lal Bhumik developed an Excimen Laser. that helped with detecting living tissue without damaging the surrounding tissues. I think it is awesome that we are able to do this with laser eye surgery. I have always thought the laser just had to be extra careful about where it hit. I did not realize it could just scan your eye and figure out where the problem areas are. optometrist

  2. Lasik is one of the safest and most effective vision correction procedures. The first cases were performed in the US in 1989 and now an average of 700,000 cases are performed annually. It is an outpatient refractive procedure that is used to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia. You will find the Best Lasik Eye Surgeon In San Diego.. With the best lasik eye surgeon in San Diego get best treatment for all your eye problems. Thanks
